soixante-dix: Analog Always

Film First Photo Show @ Fresh SLC
November 5, 2011

Here we are nearly two months later, and I finally thought it might be a good idea to post some images from the Film First photo exhibit at Fresh. I pretty much owe my life to my wonderful friends, especially Justin, for helping me bust out these frames less than 24 hours before opening night. The show went better than I could have imagined. Thank you so much to everyone who came out to support me. It probably meant more than you know. Can't wait to do another.

soixante-huit: La Vie Est Belle

Instagram on iPhone
December 10, 2011

They say a photograph is worth a thousand words. And it's true. This image perfectly emulates how I felt in this moment, how I feel about life today. My mouth couldn't form those words so well.

     La vie est belle.

soixante-sept: My Heart Starts To Slow

Holga
Fuji Provia
Snow Canyon State Park, Utah
May 2010

up late at night all alone
can't you see that I'm trying?
trying so hard to hold on
to the things I know
but in the evening I will have to go
what I most want is bad for me I know

out in the dark, shaking hands
in the street, I'm drifting
drifting away from my family towards my foes
my mother told me you'll reap what you sow
what you most is want is bad for me you know

back in my home late at night
all alone, I'm flying
flying above all my troubles
my mind's a gull
when I am happy my heart starts to slow
what I most want is bad for me I know

late in the morning I wake
all alone, I'm crying
crying for all of the people who love me so
but when we get sad we know where to go
what we most want is bad for us we know

...

Love, love, love Cults right now. And Snow Canyon, of course, will always feel like home.

soixante-quatre: I Believe In Nature

Holga
Kodak Tmax
Madrid, Spain & Canyonlands National Park, Utah
July 2011 & October 2011

"I believe in God, only I spell it Nature."
- Frank Lloyd Wright
This is an image from my film swap with the amazing Spanish photographer Jose Rodriquez. Feels like being in two places at once. On different planets, really.

My photo is of Elephant Canyon in Canyonlands. Jose's is of a memorial for the 191 victims of the March 11, 2004 Madrid train bombings and the special forces agent who died when seven suicide bombers blew themselves up on April 3, 2004.

I think Mr. Wright's quote is fitting for the image. You can read more about the photo here.

soixante-trois: Elegance In Simplicity

Homemade Matchbox Pinhole
Kodak Gold
Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
June 2010

I am a little bit baffled right now as to why it took me a year and a half to decide this photo was worth something. How can such a scrappy, lo-fi camera - this thing is literally made of a small matchbox, electrical tape, a wee bit of an aluminum can and two film canisters - create such a breathtaking photograph? Maybe that's just it.

Elegance in simplicity.
Analog always.
